Review Of Detecto Models 437/439 Balance Beam Scale
By PaulN
The Detecto Model 437/439 (the 439 has the height measuring rod)balance beam scale is virtually idential to what you are used toseeing in a doctor's office. I need to check the next time I'm inmy doctor's office but the 437/439 may be of lighter construction(but perfectly adequate for the typical home environment). In the several weeks that I have had the 439 (I ordered the Model437 but the box contained the Model 439) I have been impressed at : a.) How repeatable the measurements are b.) How the scale's calibration stays the same even when the scale is moved. The scale arrived in a very rugged cardboard box and the onlyassembly was to attach the vertical upright portion of thescale to the floor assembly (that you stand on).I think that there could be a slight weakness in the design inthe way the two pieces attach as there might be a problem withmetal fatigue if the scale was dragged around a lot by it'svertical member. The floor assembly has two metal 'tabs' that project up and itis over those 'tabs' that the vertical member is placed and thensecured with four screws on the back and two on the front. Thevertical member exhibits good stiffness when exposed to front-backpressure but it shows less resistance to side-to-side pressuresbecause there are no securing elements in those directions.Long-term I may buy some small metal angle-brackets and mount themto the left and right of the vertical member to provide support inthat plane (but I may never get around to it because in my householdthe scale will not be abused and so will probably never have aproblem). My overall evaluation of the product is that it's a bargain for thecouple of hundred dollars that I paid for mine through NorthShoreSupply (and the people there seem like nice folks).

A Scale well worth the money.
By keng70t
Having been on a diet over the last nine weeks and after being weighed weekly at the clinic I was using, I decided that I needed an accurate scale. It became obvious that it was an absolute necessity to continue the diet and to control my weight. My previous experience has been with standard bathroom scales either electronic or spring. They all have their limitations from being downright inaccurate to a pain to keep in batteries. Since my doctor had been weighing me on a balance beam scale and that the scale could accurately measure within a quarter pound I decided that was what I needed. After doing some research and just happening on a How It's Made program featuring a Detecto 437 I came to Amazon and purchased one. It came as a complete suprise to me that a balance beam scale was very reasonable priced for what you get. The assembly was a breese and the calibration was fast and easy. When I stepped on the scale it was within a half pound of the scale I had been on at the doctor's the previous day. I was sold! If you need an accurate and reliable sale look no further than the 437. And it is made in the USA!

Ideal Weight
By J. Podobinski
After having numerous store-bought scales, always thinking, Geez, I don't weigh that much or WOW,I lost a few, only to find out the scale was the culprit. The adjusting wheel would only "Zero" the dial, and not correct the problem. The Detecto "physicians scale"Detecto 437 Balance Beam Doctor/Physician Scale, 400 lbs, Made in the USAis just what I was looking for. After an easy assembly and adjustment I checked the accuracy by putting various weights on the platform, from 25#s to 250#s and it was "right on". I wish I would have bought this sooner, and it's "Made in the USA" !!!!

OK, it's a bathroom scale but WHAT a bathroom scale!
By Dom Miliano
I weighed myself on one of those drug store scales that prints out a little card - it read, "Beware of Ivory Poachers!" I tried again and it said, "Hey, one at a time!" - Alas, it was clear, I needed to watch my weight. We have a couple of scales in our house and they read about 12-15 pounds apart. I recently went to the doctor for my once every 10 years annual check up so I had the official MD scale weight. Both my scales differed widely so I was in the market for a "good" scale. Enter the Soehnle Easy Control Bathroom Scale (note - you can use it in other rooms).First, the scale came with batteries! Yes, batteries WERE included - very cool. Second, it's really high tech - thin glass plate, large numbers, lots of modern style. Third, I didn't have to crack the manual to use it the first time. Yeah, I know, an owners manual for a bathroom scale, what's up with that? But it does so much that the manual (34 pages - in EVERY conceivable language) is actually needed to get the maximum value from the thing. The scale reads your weight in pounds or kilograms (although kilograms are a unit of mass). It's simple to switch from metric to English - one button on the back does it. Then you tell it your height by pressing the arrows on the right side of the display. Place the scale on a hard, level surface and step on. The scale gives you your weight and Body Mass Index - a vital number to truly gauge your current "situation". Oh, yeah - my weight was (alas) exactly what the MD scale read.I grew up with cheap, unreliable and ugly scales in the house and simply assumed that all of them everywhere were crummy junk. This high tech, beautiful scale has made me a believer.Want to actually enjoy getting on the scale? Then try one of these bad boys. It's the best scale I have used and I think it will help me better manage my weight. Can't ask much more than that from a home appliance.Highly recommended.

I love it!
By James Duckett
This is my new go-to scale. It not only looks nice (and can be used at night since the LED lights up) but it even feels nice to step on. Don't ask me why, I know it is a crazy thing to say. My other scale (using for a decade and a half) seems to step down a little bit when I stand on it. This doesn't do that, it just feels very solid. That is the best I can do to describe it.I like that it will also track your performance so when you step on it it will continually remind you how far I've got to go to reach my goal *sad face*. I appreciate that it rounds to the nearest tenth of a pound, whereas my other scale rounded to the nearest half. And it seems very consistent. When I step on it the weight doesn't vary too much (slight variance) from one weighing to the next.I love it, and I highly recommend it. What else more can I say?

Tracks your weight -- even when you don't want to
By Vivian Deliz
The scale is very high-tech looking. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the batteries were included with the scale. I also comes with a users's manual that is about 34 pages. The only problem is that it comes in 18 languages in every section. I would have preferred that the languages were all consolidated by section (all the English together, all the German together, etc.).I decided to follow the instructions because it seemed easier than trying to figure out the controls. The first thing that I did was to change it to pounds, since it is a measure that I understand. You then have to tap on the set button to set your height and desired weight. Once set, you then stand on the scale to weight yourself. The display is big and bright. Once it stops blinking you can see your weight, BMI and how far from your desired weight you are.It also will display "LO" when the batteries are low and "OL" when the person exceeds the weight limit.I like the weight as it displayed the same weight as the one in my doctor's office.I recommend this scale. It is of high quality and very true to your weight.

Product Description

This Digiweigh Weight Tracker Digital Bathroom Body Fat Scale can accurately measure weight, water percentage and body fat. This professional scale uses a quartz digital sensor for the ultimate in accuracy, and the weigh platform contains electrodes which measure the electrical resistance of the body. Lean muscle has a lower resistance than fat, so it can be correlated with body weight. By knowing age, gender, and height, the body fat percentage is calculated by the built-in computer. The scale has a memory to store up to 3 readings each for up to four people, and it can link up to your desktop or laptop computer, via the included USB cable and software, to track your readings over a long period of time. The information stored in each memory location includes lb or kg selection, gender, height, and age. The built-in computer takes the information and computes the body fat, muscle, bone and hydration percentage, providing a quick, safe and accurate reading within 15 seconds.

close to great
By Miranda Eddy
this is the second one we have bought. the first one started to have some issues after a year or so. it still worked but you had to pick it up and and set it down again to reset it to weigh again. overall its a solid scale. my mother inlaw also has the same one with out the issue i had. we both bought at the same time.i hope this helps

A product befitting it's uniquely elegant presence
By Richard M. DeCarlo
This scale does what we expect scale's to do - namely - Gives accurate weight measurements. It doesn't take other strange medical readings like bone density, BMI and it doesn't whistle 'Dixie' when we achieve our 'weighted goals'..........It graces your bathroom with it's understated simplicity and elegance of lines. Now if it will only last as long as my last one I'll be a happy camper.

broken
By jbean
First, the product arrived with 2 AAA batteries, but it requires 4. That is irritating. Second, after buying the batteries, the digital readout shows message "StOP". So I went to SECA website, looked up the product manual, and it has no data about what digital readouts might occur. In fact, I would describe the product manual as completely useless and poorly written, although I did learn that the scale indicates your weight after you step off of it, not when you step on to it, which is unusual. So I wrote to Seca customer service, requesting data about what StOP means, and what do I need to do to get the scale to say anything BUT StOP. I have yet to receive a response. Very irritating.I do not recommend this product, although if it worked, it is attractive glass.
